The three finalists for the Kraft Heinz 57 Hospitality Heroes, in partnership with Arena, have been announced as Sam Ross, Leo Kattou and Oliver Darrington.

The finalists were announced at a drinks reception held at Kraft Heinz offices in The Shard.

The competition recognises foodservice and hospitality industry professionals, under the age of 30, who go above and beyond their job role. Individuals are nominated, rewarded and recognised by their peers.

Ross is a catering assistant with Down’s Syndrome who has worked with BaxterStorey at its contract at City of Glasgow College since 2016. She was included in the 2018 BBC 100 women list for the most inspiring and influential women around the world.

Elisabeth Histed, communication manager at BaxterStorey, who nominated Ross, said: “Sam demonstrates competitive success every day by leading by example in her spare time, whilst still holding down a full-time job and in her 12 years of employment she has never had a day off sick.”

Kattou is the senior sous chef at the Michelin-starred Simpson’s Restaurant in Edgbaston. He has a passion for Cypriot food and he has organised several pop-up events during his spare time. For instance, he raised £11,000 for The Help Refugees charity when he organised a ‘Greek night.’

Luke Tipping, executive chef and Andreas Antona, Owner of Simpson’s, who nominated Kattou, commented: “He is a great role model for the younger generation of the hospitality industry.  He is supportive, kind-hearted and I am yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love him.”

Darrington is the groups and conventions manager at the Landmark. He is involved in voluntary projects, including raising money for great Ormond Street Hospital. He also raised £8,000 by organising a variety of fundraising initiatives such as a ’Trash to Treasures’ boot sale.

Andrew Batchelor, general manager at The Landmark, who nominated Darrington, explained: “His role within the hotel is demanding with many challenges that he juggles well.

“However, being the selfless individual he is, he still finds the time to commit himself to raising much needed funds for Springboard and his hard work, creativity and initiative has resulted in the fundraising target being exceeded.”

The winner will be announced at the Arena Autumn Event taking place at Haberdashers’ Hall on 30 September.
