Charity offers £750k to fund gluten-free and coeliac research

Gluten free charity Coeliac UK, along with solutions provider Innovate UK, is this week open for applications from businesses and researchers to the £750,000 fund. 

Researchers and businesses can apply for a share of the funding through three priority themes, with the grants ranging from £50k to £250k.

The grants include: 

- Early stage feasibility; 6 - 12 months, up to £100k

- Industrial research; 12 - 36 months, £50k - £250k



New tariffs give green gas industry ‘vital boost’

The UK’s green gas industry has described the restoring of higher tariff levels for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) as a ‘vital boost’ to the UK’s ability to produce renewable green gas for heating homes and businesses through anaerobic digestion (AD).

AD plants generate biomethane, or ‘green gas’, through breaking down organic wastes such as sewage, food waste, agricultural waste and purpose-grown energy crops, which are often grown as part of an agricultural rotation. Green gas can then be burned to generate renewable heat.

The Love British Food campaign is calling upon young farmers to help promote British food to consumers in a series of activities planned for the build-up to Easter and during autumn’s British Food Fortnight.

Expenditure in food and drink falls ‘at quickest pace’ in 5 years, says Visa

While restaurants, bars and hotels were one of only two categories to register higher expenditure last month (April), Visa UK’s latest Consumer Spending Index revealed that spending in food and drink fell “at the quickest pace” since September 2013.

Of the eight categories monitored, six registered lower spending with only hotels, restaurants and bars, and health and education witnessing an increase – at +2.9% and +5% respectively.

Plans to transfer catering for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust is proposing to transfer catering, cleaning and portering roles to a company called WWL Solutions, which is owned by the trust.

About 600 workers are set to take part in a strike over the plans on May 23 and 24.
