Third quarter sales up at Greggs

03/10/2017 - 09:11
High street bakery chain Greggs has recorded sales growth of 8.6% for the 13 weeks to 30 September as it continues good trading for the year.

Total sales and like-for-like sales for the year to date are up 7.8% and 3.9% respectively versus the same period last year.

“The investment in our new forecasting and replenishment system is resulting in greater product availability for customers,” said a Greggs spokesperson. “In addition the seasonal changes to our range have been popular and we have further developed our Balanced Choice options.

“Sales at breakfast time continue to grow strongly along with participation in our great value deals.”

Greggs added caution to its results by adding that ‘food ingredient cost pressures are a headwind” but said it expected that the rate of increase “would begin to ease towards the end of the year.”

Greggs has opened 98 new stores in the year to date and closed 32, bringing its number of UK outlets to 1,800.

Speaking at Lunch! trade show last month, company chief executive, Roger Whiteside, said the company planned on expanding to "well beyond" 2,000 sites- targeting motorways and industrial parks as locations.

Whiteside also said Greggs planned on investing more into its hot food, coffee and healthy food offering going forward.
