Swine flu: Three-step plan for businesses

14/07/2009 - 00:00
Rentokil Initial is urging companies to be prepared with contingency measures should they face a swine flu outbreak. In order to minimise disruption to their operations, businesses and organisations need to act quickly to contain the infection and reassure employees.

Rentokil Initial has been called in to a number of affected businesses to help deal with the immediate aftermath of swine flu and recommends all businesses take the following three steps: 1. Be prepared – have a contingency plan in place 2. Act quickly – ensure that any individual suspected of having swine flu stays at home and takes appropriate medical advice, and take steps to reassure other colleagues 3. Be proactive - there is action you can take from short term emergency disinfecting, to long term deep cleaning, IT cleaning and providing effective hand washing facilities The call to action follows the company's first emergency call outs from organisations such as schools, a doctor's surgery, hotels and office premises wanting to quickly reassure the concerns of employees or customers following cases of swine flu on their premises. Each call out has required urgent action to thoroughly disinfect a building and provide reassurance to those people using the premises. The company's specialist disinfectant teams have experience, protective equipment and the tools required to provide an 'emergency response' service. They have also undertaken specialist swine flu training. In addition to the Hygiene teams, specialist Health & Safety experts are also available to support any particularly complex requirement. A 24/7 helpline is available on 0845 602 0900 to help organisations with their contingency planning. Teams are available across the UK. Angus Henry, managing director, Rentokil Specialist Hygiene said: "By being prepared and acting quickly businesses and other organisations can help themselves to minimise disruption, loss of revenue and reassure their employees. Many of our calls to date have been precautionary given concerns of other people working in the premises. "I'm confident in the ability of our specialist teams. They have experience from dealing with the aftermath of terrorist bombs, bird flu, Foot & Mouth and also the traditional winter flu virus which has closed buildings and severely affected organisations in the past. While we all hope that swine flu doesn't become more serious, businesses need to be prepared."
