Six Nations rugby tournament predicted to drive forward pub sales

The start of the Six Nations rugby tournament tomorrow (3 February) has been highlighted as an opportunity for pubs and bars to put some bonus points on their revenues by hospitality data solutions company, Vianet.

The tech firm pointed to analysis from 2017 as proof of the potential of international rugby union to drive sales.

In 2017, Six Nations weekends accounted for three of the top ten beer-selling days for UK pubs, according to Vianet data.

Other trading days featuring on the list include the so-called ‘Mad Friday’ prior to Christmas Day, both Christmas and New Year’s Eves and last year’s Grand National Saturday.

Steven Alton, managing director at Vianet, said: “Our data consistently shows that sporting events – and particularly international rugby - are among the most powerful drivers of beer trading peaks.

“With the Six Nations tournament running over the next few weeks, it’s vital that operators have the right focus on their range to deliver the correct throughput and ensure efficient beer quality management, whatever the match result."

The annual Six Nations tournament kicks off this weekend on Saturday 3 February, and runs to Saturday 17 March.
