Restaurant sector posts growth in May as consumer spending falls overall

The hotels, restaurants & bars sector grew 3.3% in May as consumer spending fell overall by 0.8%, according to the latest figures from Visa.

Kevin Jenkins, UK & Ireland managing director at Visa, said: “The experience sectors continued to record some growth, though at much softer rates, suggesting consumers were reining in their discretionary spending.

Visa’s UK Consumer Spending Index uses card transaction data to provide an indicator of total consumer expenditure across all payment methods
