Superbrand yesterday (12 March) revealed the UK’s top consumer brands for 2018, with restaurant chain PizzaExpress making the list for the first time alongside Pret a Manger, Coca-Cola and Carlsberg.

Judged against three core criteria - quality, reliability and distinction – PizzaExpress climbed 176 places after being voted for by 2,500 member of the public this year.

Claiming “being named a Superbrand today is more important than ever,” the company said the title is a “clear demonstration of its efforts to remain relevant, distinctive and attractive in consumers’s eyes.”

Managing director Zoe Bowley added: “We are so proud to be awarded Superbrand status. PizzaExpress has been a firm favourite of the nation since 1965, and is synonymous with good pizza and good times for all generations of families.

“It’s important to us that we continue to listen to our customers and understand the needs and wants of future generations to ensure we remain a much-loved brand.”

Chief executive of The Centre for Brand Analysis (who manages the process) and Superbrands chairman, Stephen Cheliotis, added: “Being highly thought of is important for brands in any market, but in highly competitive markets it’s essential.

“Achieving Superbrands status is recognition that PizzaExpress remains a leading brand in the UK. It confirms that PizzaExpress is respected and well-regarded by the British public, who vote to decide which brands attain the Superbrand accolade - representing in their eyes the three core factors inherent in a Superbrand - namely quality, reliability and distinction.

"With such strong performance across the casual dining sector, it illustrates the continued success of the brand and is a positive endorsement of its future in a challenging market.

“Naturally as a service brand, this is in no small part down to its employees and their ability to satisfy and exceed customers’s expectations and needs”

Other restaurant brands featured on the list, include:

  • Burger King
  • Caffè Nero
  • Costa
  • Domino’s Pizza
  • Gregg's
  • KFC
  • McDonald's
  • Nando's
  • Pizza Hut
  • Pret a Manger
