New Peckham restaurant ‘Coal Rooms’ to open on 1930’s train station site

The main restaurant has space for 30 covers and a private dining room for up to 14 guests

Coal Rooms restaurant, a café/bar built on the site of Peckham Rye’s old 1930’s train station, will open to the public in August.

The restaurant has restored the former grade II listed train ticket office into a 24-seater café that transforms into a bar in the evening.

It is the newest South London eatery from the Peckham-based entrepreneurs and childhood friends, Richard Robinson and Cemal Ezel, whose stable includes Peckham restaurants The Old Spike Roastery and Aside, as well as Spike and Earl in Camberwell.

Co-owner Robinson said: "As locals to the area, both as existing business owners and residents, we wanted to create a space that respected the heritage of the landmark site whilst providing a new drinking and dining experience for the people of Peckham.

“We felt it important that a local group who knew and understood the uniqueness of Peckham took it on and delivered something that worked for the area."

The Coal Rooms menu will make use of the restaurant’s on-site butchery, focusing on a variety of meats and cuts, whilst also ‘drawing influence from the diverse community in Peckham’.

Head Chef Sam Bryant’s (Smokehouse, Princess of Shoreditch) menu extensively uses a robata grill and coal ovens, with a focus on working creatively to reduce waste in the kitchen.
