Essential Cuisine acquired by European supplier

Stocks and sauces manufacturer, Essential Cuisine, has been acquired by European brand Solina for an undisclosed sum - with plans to expand the combined group ‘into new territories.’

Led by Solina UK country manager, Adam Jones, Essential Cuisine’s local shareholder team (founder Nigel Crane, Neil Corlett and Jamie McGregor) will only remain with the business for “the next few months to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.”

MPs and peers will have to pay a 25p ‘latte levy’ if they use a disposable coffee cup in parliament, under new plans to reduce plastic waste.

According to The Times, plastic bottles of mineral water will be banned from parliament, with extra water dispensers installed for reusable bottles.

The changes will be introduced this summer and mean parliament will test ideas the government may introduce nationwide.

Compass Group UK & Ireland has this week (11 May) retained its title as the Workplace and Catering Sandwich Retailer of the year, at The British Sandwich Industry Awards.

The Celtic Manor Resort in Newbridge on Usk, Wales is launching a pop-up restaurant serving edible insects to celebrate the Royal Entomological Society’s National Insect Week.

The limited edition lunch and dinner experience, running from June 21 to June 23, will include delicacies such as curried cricket pakora, bug burger bites, and toasted cumin and mealworm houmous.

Profit up 33% for global travel operator SSP, H1 results reveal

Global food and drink travel operator, SSP Group, announced that profits are up by 33% to £55 million for the six months to 31 March, in its H1 financial results published today (16 May).

While revenue also increased by 12% - from circa £1m in H1 2017 to £1.2m this year – like-for-like sales growth remained pretty constant from +2.9% to +2.8%.

Tom Beauchamp, who has worked for the company for five years, has become development chef UK and Ireland for sports and leisure, working on a range of strategies.

Bartlett Mitchell raises £10,000 for military children charity

Staff at independent caterer Bartlett Mitchell have helped to raise over £10,000 for children’s charity Little Troopers, by climbing Mount Snowdon.

The 13-strong team and 10 of their family members joined a group of 52 others in the 2018 Snowdon Challenge on May 6.

World Baking Day is taking place on Thursday (May 17). To celebrate, Janis Anderson and her team at Caremark Aylesbury are hosting their very own bake-off, open to all.

The local home care provider has invited anyone who wants to take part to bake a cake, cookie or savoury item and take it to the offices at The Firs on High Street in Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire. 

At 12 noon, the judges will be sampling the food before announcing the winners.
