LACA School Chef of the Year 2019 finalists McDougalls

The 2019 national finalists in LACA’s School Chef of the Year 2019 competition, sponsored by McDougalls, came face to face for the first time in St Albans on February 5 for a pre-final briefing at Premier Foods' UK head office.

They will next meet up on March 7th in Stratford upon Avon for the final which will decide who is the 2019 winner.

School caterer Alliance in Partnership (AiP) challenged GCSE pupils at The Cottesloe School (Leighton Buzzard), to design the new branding for its on-site catering cabin.

Sales of organic food and drink to caterers grew almost 8% to £90.9 million in the UK in 2018, according to the Soil Association Certification’s Organic Market Report.

It reports that this growth was achieved despite public spending cuts and has been attributed in part to continued interest in Soil Association’s Food For Life scheme.

Schools will be able to be “flexible” in what dinners they serve children in England if there are food shortages because of Brexit, the government has said.

Four ‘leading’ UK caterers - Compass Group UK & Ireland, Caterlink, Olive Catering and Vertas – have committed to increase vegetable consumption in the UK by signing up to The Food Foundation's ‘Peas Please’ initiative.

A consultation on the future of allergen labelling has been launched by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS).
