200 year 6 pupils from North Yorkshire have been given the chance to shape services offered in schools through interactive workshops that included making school meals more ‘enticing’.

The Pupil Innovation Festival was held at Thirsk Racecourse by North Yorkshire Education Services (NYES), which is run by the county council. Pupils worked with Matt Leivers, group chef manager at Michelin-starred Star Inn restaurants to develop new school meals.

LACA’s School Chef of the Year competition has been launched yesterday (Wednesday 10 July) at its annual Main Event.

Healthy Schools Rating Scheme published

The long-awaited Healthy Schools Rating Scheme has today (8 July) been published by The Department for Education.

The voluntary scheme asks for schools to complete a survey with questions such as whether healthy eating is a curriculum policy, whether food is grown on-site for school meals and how much time is spent on PE during the week.

Alaska Seafood brand ambassador Alyn Williams of Alyn Williams at The Westbury, Mayfair London, joined LACA’s School Chef of the Year Steven Cross, head chef at Park Community School to create a seafood menu.

British children are consuming as much as 10x the recommended sugar levels at school, sugar campaigning organisation, Sugarwise, has claimed.
