Food waste and surplus is costing the UK more than £1 Bn

Around 3.6 million tonnes of food waste and surplus occur in primary production every year, costing the UK £1.2 billion according to research by the sustainability body Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

WRAP has generated the ‘most reliable’ estimate to date for total farm surplus and food waste, which assessed the core categories of vegetables, fruit, cereal crops, dairy and livestock. The 3.6 million tonnes of food waste and surplus per annum is equivalent to 7.2% of production.

Independents by Sodexo wins £4.25m five-year contract for Worcester school

Independents by Sodexo, has been awarded a five-year contract to manage the catering and cleaning services at The King’s School in Worcester.

Hampshire County Council’s Catering Service (HC3S) celebrates 30th anniversary

HC3S is celebrating three decades of preparing ‘nutritious’ and award-winning meals to thousands of school children in Hampshire.

Foodservice Price Index reaches record high, but inflation eases

A key foodservice price index shows price rises in nine out of ten categories in May, but also points out that year-on-year inflation has actually eased.

In-house, school catering consultants, CMC, invited the former England Rugby star turned celebrity Masterchef, Phil Vickery, to visit one of its client schools, Turves Green Boys in Birmingham for a healthy eating talk.

The visit, on 27 June, was arranged through CMC’s supplier Creed Food Services and formed part of the year 9’s Food Technology course with Vickery delivering a motivational Healthy Eating talk to the pupils before hosting a question and answer session for the whole school.

Just 29% of hospitality and leisure businesses have replaced some or all of the single-use plastics their customers use with more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as reusable coffee cups, research has found.

A YouGov survey commissioned by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and Brita UK found that only 8% of SME businesses in the hospitality sector say they have used incentives such as purchase discounts to encourage customers to change their behaviour around single-use plastics.
