Emma Read, the deputy director of the childhood obesity branch at the Department of Health, will headline a keynote seminar on delivering the new childhood obesity plan.

The keynote will look ahead to the next 10 years covered by the government’s childhood obesity plan, alongside the Treasury’s release of responses to the public consultation on the implementation of new Soft Drinks Industry Levy from April 2018 and the recent ruling on the ban of junk food advertising in children’s media.

The session will be chaired by Maggie Throup MP, member of the Health Select Committee and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Obesity; and Baronness Jenkin of Kennington, vice-chair of the APPG on Adult and Childhood Obesity.

Other speakers confirmed for the keynote, include Elizabeth Castle, co-facilitator of behavioural insights team at Public Health England; Dr Rachel Pryke, clinical advisor on nutrition and obesity of Royal College of General Practitioners; Chris Askew, chief executive of Diabetes UK; Gavin Parkington, director general of British Soft Drinks Association; and Tim Rycroft, corporate affairs director of Food & Drink Federation.

The industry’s role in reducing sugar consumption, including product development and reformulation, as well as the next steps for best clinical practice to tackle obesity, and the challenges for primary care in getting the balance right between intervention and treatment will also be key talking points during the seminar.
