18/07/2008 - 00:00
Frimley Park Hospital will be burying a time capsule in its grounds on Tuesday 22nd July as part of a programme of events to celebrate the 60th birthday of the NHS.

The capsule, which contains various items representative of life at Frimley Park Hospital today, is marked for opening in 2048 when the NHS will be 100 years old. Frimley Park's chairman, Sir Mike Aaronson and chief executive Andrew Morris will witness the burial along with Ian Wilder, vice-chairman of governors, Lt Col Suzie Greenwood representing the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) and members of hospital staff. The range of items buried in the capsule includes: • DVD containing footage of a Board of Directors meeting held during NHS60 week. It includes a message from Sir Mike Aaronson, to whoever opens the capsule in 40 years time. • Parts of hip and knee replacement prostheses • An example vial of a thrombolysing drug used to treat stroke victims within three hours of onset. This treatment has been offered since October 2007 and is available 24 hours a day. • Cardiac stents with supporting information about current cardiology services • Montage photograph depicting the various services offered by the physiotherapy department • NHS60 edition of Inform, the hospital's staff newsletter • Official plaque of the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit. MDHU staff are fully integrated with Frimley Park staff and work alongside them to provide services to all patients. Andrew Morris said: "We have tried to ensure that everything in the capsule will be of interest to our NHS colleagues in 40 years time. For example, I'm sure they will be amazed to see the kind of hip and knee joints being used in 2008 as advances in joint replacement surgery techniques will no doubt have changed beyond recognition."
