  • The stickers on fruit are edible (FDA considers them food grade).
  • In the Philippines people eat a common street food called Balut. It is a developing duck embryo that is boiled alive in its shell.
  • Before 1991 Twix Bars were known as ‘raider’ in Europe.
  • Three quarters of all the food we eat on this planet come from eight types of grains: maize, rice, wheat, oats, barley, sorghum, millet and rye.
  • Apples belong to the rose family, as do pears and plums.
  • A microwave uses more electricity to power its clock than to heat its food.
  • In Australia Burger King is called Hungry Jacks.  
  • You have been eating insects all your life! Some red food colouring used in sweets is made of crushed bugs.
  • You can pop a balloon with orange peel. The limonene in the orange peel dissolves the rubber.
  • In 2001 Matt Hand broke the record for the number of grapes eaten in 3 minutes (he ate 133).
