Congratulations to our Get Traditional Day winning school

I am really looking forward to seeing the results of the LACA and ParentPay Market Research which will be announced on Monday 5th November 2012.  It’s always great to get parents’ views on today’s school meals and health issues and I am sure it will start some interesting discussions.

One figure that really stood out for me in 2011 was that 95.9% of parents agree with the statement, "My child should learn to cook at school".  This struck a chord with me as I also feel very strongly that pupils should be given lots of opportunity to learn about cooking and where food comes from. 

This statistic inspired us to create a fantastic prize for a Get Traditional Day competition during LACA’s National School Meals Week (NSMW) 2012.   As well as being a sponsor for NSMW, Bernard Matthews Foodservice is a business partner of the Craft Guild of Chefs.  We felt a workshop run by them would give pupils the opportunity to learn to cook with their family.

And the winner is...

Over the summer lots of schools entered this competition via the website and I am delighted to announce that the winning school is Ysgol y Gader in Dolgellau, Gwynedd

Pupils and parents from this Welsh comprehensive school will get to spend time together learning about food and nutrition in a family food appreciation workshop. This workshop is for up to 12 pupils and their parents and will be delivered in the bilingual school’s food technology kitchen by a member of the UK’s leading chef’s association.  Our aim is to develop an appreciation of food as a family through relevant food knowledge.

Participants will learn how to prepare time and cost-effective, nutritionally-balanced food together, as well as understanding basic food hygiene and equipment.

I believe the day will also be a great opportunity for us to show families how they can ‘lean on’ quality British turkey as a low in saturated fat ingredient that is also cost-effective and incredibly versatile.  Each participant will get to make a turkey dish to take home with them at the end of the workshop.  Our team and the school are really looking forward to this day and I look forward to sharing the experience with you in a future blog.

And the runners up...

As second prize in the draw, five schools won tasting sessions with a home economist.  These sessions will demonstrate how to get the best out of British turkey and, specifically, how Bernard Matthews Foodservice’s Big Green Tick products for schools can help caterers develop menus which meet food and nutrient based standards.

The schools winning this prize were:-

  • Birchwood Junior School – Lincoln
  • Paddox Primary School – Rugby
  • Broomgrove School – Essex

And on Wednesday 7th November, 10 schools will be decorating their dining hall with a ‘Get Traditional’ theme day pack containing bunting, balloons and flags as the winners of our third prize.
