Compass Group, which operates catering contracts across schools, hospitals, care homes and military bases, has received the ‘Best Waste Prevention Project Award (Food)’ at Footprint’s waste2zero awards.

Now in its third year, the waste2zero awards aim to give the foodservice industry a platform to showcase what organisations have done to reduce their waste and food waste.

Waste remains one of the biggest challenges to the foodservice industry, particularly food waste where 920,000 tonnes of food is wasted every year, of which a staggering 75% is avoidable. An estimated 30%-50% of food produced never reaches a human stomach.

Celena Fernandez, head of environment at Compass Group, said: “I am delighted that our work in this area has been acknowledged. We recognise the importance of taking action to address the use of single-use plastic across our business.

“We have decided to focus on educating both our people and clients on what steps can be taken to make a difference. It’s really important we don’t make knee jerk decisions that result in alternatives being introduced that are more damaging to the environment. We are really proud of what we have achieved so far and remain focused on continuing to address this issue.”
