Coffee chain Tim Hortons announces first UK drive thru

Canadian coffee giant Tim Hortons is continuing its expansion into the UK market with the opening of its first drive thru in Manchester.

The drive thru and restaurant on Bury New Road is the company’s first site in England and the first in a number of openings planned for the Manchester area.

Tim Hortons opened its first UK store on Argyle Street in Glasgow in June followed by an opening in Cardiff and a second branch in Glasgow.

The chain is one of Canada’s most well known brands and its most popular coffee shop with claims to being the source of nearly eight out of all ten cups of coffee drunk in the country.

Tim Hortons, named after a former Canadian Ice Hockey player, opened its first restaurant in Canada in 1964. It moved to 100 stores in the country by 1978, 1,000 by 1995 and 3,000 by 2006.

It also has 500 branches across the US and 60 across Asia.

The UK rollout will continue next year as it looks to disrupt the dominance of the 'big three' coffee chains- Costa, Starbucks and Caffé Nero.
