EU to ban single-use plastics

Single-use plastic items, such as plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks or cotton buds, will be banned in the EU under plans adopted on Wednesday (24 October).

In a similar move to plans announced earlier in the week by UK Government, the products, which make up 70% of marine litter, will be banned from the EU market from 2021, under draft plans approved by the Parliament.

Celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) businesspeople who are successful in their own career while creating ‘supportive workplaces for other LGBT people,’ the 2018 OUTstanding LGBT + Role Models lists were published yesterday (25 October).

Presented by the Financial Times (FT), the latest edition saw Margot Slattery, Sodexo country president for Ireland, come in at number nine on the list of top 100 LGBT executives.

Gut bacteria can predict obesity at age 12, according to study

The microbiota in a toddler’s gut can predict the chances of a child being obese when older, according to a study.

The study, published in the journal mBio, tracked 165 Norwegian children and found that the organisms detected in their gut at age two, ‘were highly predictive’ of which ones would have a BMI that qualified them as overweight or obese at the age of 12.
