Increased demand for organic food without the price tag

Although ‘conscious consumerism’ is on the rise, European shoppers aren’t always willing to pay en ‘ethical premium’ with 48% admitting that they are ‘particularly reluctant’ to pay more for locally-sourced and organic food.

Carried out by market research agency IRI on 3,300+ EU consumers, the survey found that 70% prefer to buy from companies that are “fair and transparent, respect the environment, use recyclable packaging and have low food miles.”

Soil Association awards Blackburn charity Organic Served Here

As part of its Organic Served Here scheme, the Soil Association has awarded the café at the Sanctuary of Healing Trust (Blackburn) five stars – meaning that over 95% of its ingredients are organic.

Said to be the first holistic and spiritual centre in the UK to receive the award, five stars is the highest rating possible and “assures customers that they are eating and drinking from a menu made up of between 15% and 100% certified organic products.”

Institute of Food Science and Technology hosts ‘Celebrating Individuality’ event

The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) is hosting a ‘Celebrating Individuality’ event next month, exploring the opportunities for personalisation in the food and drink industry.

625,000 jobs could be lost sector-wide, warns UKHospitality

UK government will announce its Autumn Budget on Monday (29 October), but trade body UKHospitality already has trepidations - warning that 625,000 ‘vital’ sector jobs could be lost over the next five years.

Following the publication of the ‘Economic Contribution of the UK Hospitality Industry Report,’ the national organisation said that “hundreds of thousands of vital sector jobs could be lost and investment stunted” if it continues to be overtaxed without government support.
