Recognising contract caterers who “commit to and publish a robust sustainable fish buying policy,” health and social care meal provider, apetito has topped the Sustainable Fish Cities 2017 league table.

Following its investigation into how well contract catering companies are checking and sourcing sustainable fish, which found that some caterers are selling red-rated species, Sustainable Fish Cities said: “Apetito (demonstrated) commitment to producing the highest standard of food, placing its ethical and sustainable policy at the core of the business and its objectives. “

Laura Hardman, ethical and sustainable manager at Apetito, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to be ranked as leaders, taking first place on the Sustainable fish catering 2017 league table. We strive to ensure the ingredients we source allow us to make great quality, nutritious meals that have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of both our consumers and the planet.

“We will continue to challenge ourselves to set a higher standard and deliver against our ethical and sustainable objectives in the years to come.”

Coordinator of Sustainable Fish Cities, Ruth Westcott, commented: “Apetito deserves to come top of the Sustainable Fish Cities league table. It has proven it takes sustainable fish sourcing seriously. We were particularly impressed by the proportion of fish in its meals, which is Marine Stewardship Council certified or rated 1-2 by the Marine Conservation Society. Apetito is setting the standard for others to follow. Well done”
